Summer 2014

We had intended to report on the 100th Anniversary of the foundation of the NGF and golf in 1914 in this edition, however the summer exploits of a certain Northern Irishman warrant special attention now.We are sure the Federation will forgive us.

Few golfers reach the accolade of being referred only by their first name.Jack,Seve and Tiger are now joined by Rory, who answered his many critics during an unbelievable 4 week spell this summer.

Rory McIlroy dropped dramatically down the World Rankings after a much publishised equipment change and an engagement to a tennis star.He sunk to an all time low when wihdrawing from the Honda Classic. However, back he came with a victory at the BMW at Wentworth setting him up for his recent heriocs.

His Open triumph at Hoylake in July, made him a popular winner, gaining his 3rd different Major trophy. That put him alongside fellow first-namers Nicklaus and Woods as 3 time winners at 25 years old.His nr 1 spot in the OWGR was secured with the Bridgestone title and the icing on the cake came at the 96th US PGA Championship at Valhalla the following week, pipping Mickelson,Stenson and Fowler. He lost his overnight leadearly in the final round ,but a spectacular eagle at 10 set up a charge for his 4th Major.

This achievement puts alongside Jack and Tiger, not forgetting Tom Morris Jr who have all won 4 Major titles at 25 years of age.Nicklaus' tally of 18,which Tiger was expected to reach, may again be in danger.......

He will be an inspiration to the European team at Gleneagles next month,an event which may cause the NGF to wait a bit longer, and will have the FedEx and Dubai in his sights.

However,it will be next April ,at Augusta, when we see if he can complete his Grand Slam.......Well done Rory....
