Doughtie Sr. on Golf (September 2012)

Normally we have previewed major golf events prior to their commencement, but due to vacation and other commitments we have chosen to report on the USPGA after it's completion.

The 4th golf Major of the year was contested on the challenging Ocean Course at Kiawak,South Carolina, between 9th and 12th August. The location is imfamously remembered for the Ryder Cup of 1991,which became known as the "Battle on the Shore".

When this event achieved it's Major tag is not definite. It was introduced in 1916 and took matchplay format until it became strokeplay in 1958.In some charts all the winners from it's inception are granted Major honour status. However,I consider it didn't reach that accolade till 1958,when under pressure from TV broadcasters and the media in general it became a 72 hole event.

This year Northern Ireland's Rory McIllroy, answered his critics with a convincing 8 shot victory, which equalled his winning margin at the previous years´ US Open and the previous record set by Jack Nicklaus in 1980.This made him the youngest (23 years and 3 months)double Major winner since Seve Ballesteros in 1980 and the youngest USPGA winner in it's present strokeplay form.

He is the first Brit to triumph since the inaugural competition, when Jim Barnes won the first of his 2 titles. It is a tournament that non-Americans have had difficulty to capture.Fifty-five different US golfers have claimed the trophy 77 times, with 16 other titles going to "foreigners",spread over 9 nationaliites.Walter Hagen won it 5 times and the legendary Gene Sarazen was only 20 years old when he won in 1922.Scotsmen Tommy Armour, born Carnoustie and Jock Hutchison,St Andrews, were US citizens when they succeeded.

As a result of his victory,Rory regained the World number 1 tag and became the 6th youngest Major winner of all time. But was no threat to Young Tom Morris ,who was British Open champion when only 18 in 1869.

We wish Rory and the other members of the European Ryder Cup side good luck at this months contest at Medinah.
